Training Your Puppy On A Leash Tips

Tip 1: Training Inside

First you will need to train your puppy to sit and stay. This will allow you to command when on a leash. Begin wearing leash and collar around the house in short periods. Wearing around the house helps them realize it is not going to hurt them.

Your puppy will be able to focus better by training with leashes inside the house. There are fewer distractions for them. The key to training puppies is to keep a routine time of training. Try and use the same time each day with short lessons.

Go to the door and get his leash and collar. If he starts to bark, jump, etc. just stand there and do absolutely nothing until he calms down. Then try and put the collar and lead on. Repeat this steps if needed. Never let your puppy drag you out of the house.

Tip 2: Training Outside

To help with your puppy to not pull you around while walking, play fetch in the yard or hallway. You can even play tug a war. Getting all the excess energy out of your puppy beforehand will help you succeed more quickly with training with nylon leashes.

Bring desirable treats with you. Soft treats work the best because your puppy will eat them fast and continue walking.

Start training outside in a familiar place. Some example places are in your yard or garage. Most puppies will need to relieve themselves when you first bring them out. Let them and continue training.

Tip 3: One Method of Training with Leashes

While going for a walk and your puppy begins to pull, this gives you the signal to turn and walk the other direction.

Say “Easy” before your puppy reaches the end of the leash. If he slows down say “Yes”. Then call him back to you for a treat. If he doesn't slow down just turn and walk the other direction. Do not give him a treat for not listening. Keep repeating this step as needed. Your puppy will realize he is not getting any closer to his destination.
